moreAncient cultures in Africa revered the giraffe drawing it prominently in prehistoric cave paintings. This extraordinary 1940s piece is carved from iron wood, a durable and hard wood found in Southern Africa that requires both masterly skill and patience to achieve a piece of this quality. Carving is generational and stays within a family. The master artisans pass it down to the next generation and the tradition continues. Each artist/carver puts their own ’stamp’ on their work, like this Mother and Child. The influence of modern artists visiting Africa during the ‘40s can be seen in the modernist, elongated look on the animals; a more traditional giraffe would have been favored only 30 years earlier. The carving remains sublime, the composition is perfect and we can look forward to the next generations developing their own influences, while keeping the tradition alive. We recommend a yearly cleaning and conditioning with tung oil. less
