This Doulton Lambeth stoneware hunting lidded ware jar features four sprigged topers (drinkers) motifs around the body, and the lid carries a sprigged garland of flowers. The top and cover of the body have been dipped in a darker ochre brown glaze. The rim and base of the body are decorated with an excellent chain motif, which is echoed around the edge of the lid. This would have been done with a coggle wheel. The sprigs are made when the clay is pressed into a very shallow mold, gently teased out, and then carefully applied by hand to the body of the jug before the piece is fired and glazed. See less
