It is handmade by skilled craftsmen, who specialize in stencil carving. Prior to the carving, several Japanese washi/rice papers are adjoined to form a single sheet of paper, soaked in tannin-rich persimmon juice/kakishibu, which adds wonderful warm brown tone to paper and makes it durable and water resistant. Detailed and delicate. This Katagami can be painted in any color, trimmed, matted and framed. Set of framed Katagami makes a great statement in any room. Japan, Edo era, circa 1850.
