I say lamp base because of the hold drilled from the top all the way through to the bottom. Great for a large sculpture. The top surface area from rim to rim measures 16”, but the area inside the rim where you could sit something flat is 11.75” diameter. You could always put a glass surface inside the rimmed area to make a larger surface area. See less
