A finely crafted antique Japanese brass vase with two handles in simplified serpent-dragon form, four cabriole legs probably in the form of simplified elephant-head set on the hexagonal pedestal, the six-sided body decorated with four-paneled or framed "flower and bird" motifs (magpies, plum-blossom, peony and rockwork symbolizing auspiciousness and prosperity), the tall neck decorated with floral patterns extending to a slightly flared and rimmed mouth, finely cast body with hand-chiseled decorative motifs in great details, refined material with elegant gold sheen and good-feel weight, in overall good condition with no losses and damage, some surface stains, discoloration and patina commensurate with the age and use, Meiji period, late 19th century, private Lower Manhattan collection
7 1/2 in. (19.1 cm) high
The form and decorative patterns on this vase typically reflect the taste of ancient Japanese scholars. It could be displayed on the bookshelf, desk or tea stand in a scholar's study or hall for decoration or used as a flower vase.
