Dows 1904-81 was born in the Hudson Valley area where he lived most of his life except when he was working in DC or Chile. Dows was educated at Harvard‘s Department of fine Art and Yale‘s student league where he studied under Eugene Savage, Edward Taylor and CK Chatterton to name a few. His family‘s close friendship with President Roosevelts family in Hyde Park, reoccurred as an important factor in his career. Dows assisted in establishing the Treasury Dept of Public Works of Art Project (WPA), Authored a book on Roosevelt and painted many public murals especially in post offices.
During the 1930s, Dow traveled to Mexico and created wood cuts, watercolors and a few paintings but his wood cuts seem to be the most highly coveted. His art can be found in numerous worthy collections such as the Smithsonian, Baltimore Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Library of Congress, Phillips collection, Vassar College Museum, FD Roosevelt library, Hyde Park, New York, and the National Collection of Fine Art to name a few.
