A Santo Figure (Saint) is a religious art form found in Spain and areas that were colonies of the Kingdom of Spain, consisting of wooden or ivory statues that depict various saints. In the Caribbean, drawing on Taíno traditions of carved idols, the Spanish missionaries started the tradition in the 16th century pushing to have Christian saints to pray to in homes.

Likely of Caribbean origins, this work is hand-carved, painted with layers of black, burgundy and tan paint down to large areas of visible wood. This work depicts Saint Anthony wearing a robe and shown with hands extended forward. Mounted on an original carved wood base.

The charm of these pieces is in the visible history that can be seen especially in the hand-carved details and visible layers of paint applied through years of use. The Santos held a special place in the home and were often passed down through generations. Villages often had one family known for carving these pieces. By details and style, they can sometimes be attributed to specific makers or families.

Condition: Great antique condition, wear commensurate with age and use. Some loss to body at the center base of figure. Natural wear to painted surface.
