This is a blown glass vase designed by Archimede Seguso and made by Vetreria Archimede Seguso in Murano, Venice, Italy, in about 1955.
This hand-blown glass experimental vase is made up of twisted black and red bands of color which in turn are twisted into a three-dimensional spiral shaped abstract composition. The bands of alternating color reinforce the biomorphic shape of the vase which creates a sculptural and asymmetrical form. The color and form of the vase is inspired by natural elements in contrast to the classic and more subdued pre-war Murano glass style.
Boldly colored and highly innovative glass and ceramics contributed greatly to 'organic modernism' in design, which was inspired by contemporary abstract sculpture and natural shapes, such as the atom and the cell, revealed under powerful new microscopes. Blown glass lent itself particularly well to the sensual shapes and long, flowing lines of 1950s modernism and this vase embodies the spirit of the period in which it was created.
Visually striking and almost magical in the way it is formed, post-war Venetian glass continues to challenge and inspire glassmakers around the world.
Archimede Seguso (1909-1999) formed his own glass factory in 1946, called Vetraria Archimede Seguso. In his factory he experimented with a wide range of forms and colors, subject matters and abstract shapes.
The vase is in excellent vintage condition, with NO chips or cracks. This glass vase is the PERFECT addition to your Mid-Century Modern Art collection.
