This is a rare original poster created by Robert Rauschenberg for his 1997 exhibition held at the Aktionsforum Praterinsel in Munich showcasing his major technological artworks of the 1960s. The featured work –Soundings– is a 1968 monumental installation combining art and technology and one of the very first immersive interactive artworks. As people make some noise, sensors detect it and turn on concealed lights, the more the noise the brighter the work and the brighter the work the more chairs the viewer sees flying helter skelter across the work spanning the entire gallery. The artist described it in the following way: “Soundings is a visual audio spectator controlled work. The images are illuminated for the duration of the noise. The work can be activated or triggered at different frequencies simultaneously, therefore it’s a group work.” The poster captures the work with multiple photographs all fused together into a highly charged image through Robert Rauschenberg’s signature collage aesthetic.
