Rare double gourd vessel created by Benjamin Soto for Mata Ortiz pottery. This asymmetrical piece is beautifully etched and painted in Native American earth tones and black, and would make a lovely vase. The vessel is marked with an etched "B. Soto" on the bottom. Depending on the angle, the top gourd appears off-center, which makes the piece unique.
Mata Ortiz pottery, a recreation of Mogollon pottery visioned by Juan Quezada Celado, is from the Mexican state of Chihuahua. An archeological site, Paquime, brought about hand-created pieces replicating pottery that dated back to the 13th century. Many potters learned the techniques to duplicate the works in their own artistic styles, and in the 1970s the well known Mata Ortiz pieces were introduced to the U.S. market and are well sought after, not only for the collector but museums, galleries, and cultural institutions.
