Jon Naar had many careers until the mid-sixties when he decided to make a career change. After about 10 years of being a weekend photography hobbyist, he decided he wanted to be a professional photographer. 1965 he was commissioned to photograph a portrait of Andy Warhol, for what is now known as New York Magazine. This image of Mr. Warhol, on the red sofa in the silver factory, has become iconic.
In 1967 Jon was hired by Knoll International to work with Massimo Vignelli creating furniture brochures as rebranding was taking place. Mr. Naar became synonymous with photographing furniture in the habitat it would be used in. Working as the photographer for Knoll during this era allowed him to work with some of the greatest modern furniture designers of our time. While photographing a Marcel Bruer chair, his daughter was in the room, so he took the image with her in it. That chair later became to be known as the Francesca chair, her name. He also, photographed Henry Bertoia in the space working while photographing some of his classic seating pieces. While working for Knoll he created 7-10 brochures and advertising materials. Jon went on to photograph many architectural shoots with IBM as well as different portraits of designers and architects.
It wasn't until 1972 that Mr. Naar was approached by a company called Prestel to come up with a NY-themed book. This is when Jon decided he wanted to photograph the emerging art of NYC graffiti. He was the first photographer to capture this type of subject matter. On this 10 day assignment, he ended up pairing up with a group of 12-year-old boys that claimed to be artists but were known in the graffiti community as toys. These boys did introduce Mr. Naar to real king artists. After 7 days of photographing all over NYC, the images were compiled in the book The Faith Of Graffiti.
This Silk Screen Is known as "The Truck NYC" and was printed around 1974.
