A remarkable Southeast Asian antique carved wood figure of a seated Buddha.
Born in Thailand in the 17th/18th century, exceptionally executed, the Buddhist temple statue is carved seated on a double lotus base with his hands pressed together in the wai position which is a standard Thai posture of greeting, he has a beautiful face with a serene expression and downcast eyes, the hair is worn in tight curls in a top knot, robes draped loosely about the body and open at the chest. The sculpture has scattered remnants of original polychrome pigment decoration.
Beautifully aged distressed patina with scattered losses adds a dramatic touch to the serene tranquil carving.
