This unusual earthenware vessel is from the 17th or 18th century, made in England. We do not know the original purpose, let us know if you do. :) We love this odd piece!
Slipware pottery refers to a decorating process where slip is placed onto the leather-hard clay body surface before firing by dipping, painting or splashing. Slip is a watery mixture of clays and other minerals such as quartz, feldspar and mica. The slip is placed onto a wet clay surface either by dipping, painting, piping or splashing. In the case of this pitcher, the slip has been piped on the surface.
