Neoclassical Revival: Bradley & Hubbard Cast Iron "Greek Temple" Bookends,
Circa. 1925
A handsome pair of antique cast iron bookends produced by the renowned Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Company (Meriden, Connecticut), dating to circa 1925.
Designed in the Classical Revival style (often overlapping with the "Egyptian Revival" enthusiasm of the 1920s following the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb), each bookend is modeled as the portico of an Ancient Greek Temple. The architectural form features a pedimented roof supported by a colonnade of six Doric columns, resting on a stepped plinth. The iron retains its original dark, bronzed patina, lending the pieces a substantial, monumental quality despite their compact size.
Markings:
Impressed Mark: The reverse of the base bears the circular foundry mark B&H (intertwined within a concave indentation), the standard mark for the firm's decorative metalware.
Condition: Very good antique condition.
Measurements:
Height: 3 3/8 inches (8.6 cm)
Width: 4 3/4 inches (12.1 cm)
Depth: 1 1/4 inches (3.2 cm)
Historical Context:
Bradley & Hubbard was one of America's premier producers of Art Metal goods in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their bookends were marketed as "artistic accessories" for the modern home, sold in high-end department stores like Marshall Field's. This specific "Temple" model reflects the 1920s fascination with ancient history and architectural purity, serving as a dignified support for a library collection.
