Monumental Rose Medallion: Pair of 25-Inch Chinese Export Palace Vases
(c. 1850–1865)
A magnificent and imposing pair of mid-19th century Chinese Export porcelain vases, executed in the highly sought-after Rose Medallion palette. Dating to the late Daoguang or early Tongzhi period (c. 1850–1865), these vases are notable for their exceptional scale and superior quality of painting.
Standing over two feet tall, the baluster-form bodies are richly decorated against a crisp white ground—a marker of earlier, higher-quality production compared to the crowded celadon grounds of later wares. The primary reserves on the front and back are framed by elaborate blue enamel chi dragon borders and feature lively, multi-figure court scenes of Mandarin officials and ladies in domestic interiors.
The sides feature unique, shaped subsidiary panels: the upper reserves are modeled as incense burners (censers), while the lower ones take the form of auspicious fruits (pomegranates or peaches). The white ground is densely interspersed with "Hundred Antiques" motifs, precious objects, and floral sprays. The necks are flanked by applied gilt Buddhist Lion (Foo Dog) handles, and the shoulders feature high-relief gilt Chi Dragons (hydras).
Condition: Excellent antique condition. Enamels are vibrant with minimal rubbing. Gilt handles show typical age-related wear but remain intact. No hairlines or restoration observed.
Measurements:
Height: 25 inches (63.5 cm)
Width/Diameter: 10 inches (25.4 cm)
Historical Context:
"Rose Medallion" is the most famous of the 19th-century Canton famille rose patterns, characterized by alternating panels of figures and birds/flowers. However, this specific pair transcends the standard export ware due to its monumental size, likely intended for the grand salons of Europe or the wealthy merchant homes of the American East Coast. The use of the "precious objects" on a white ground, rather than the ubiquitous green scrollwork, places these in a higher tier of artistry.
