In the second half of the 18th century, the first "Schapp" cabinets were created in northern Germany for the hallways of wealthy merchants and citizens. The new design feature of so-called "cushions," which originated in Holland and were used as fillings for doors, cabinet sides, and drawer fronts, became popular in the Hanseatic region and then throughout Germany. The Schapp became increasingly popular in the late 17th and early 18th centuries and replaced the bridal chest. The Hamburg Schapp model became particularly well known, but so did those from Lübeck and Danzig. For the first time, a local type of cabinet was also adopted in other regions while retaining its name.
