The Spode Greek pattern pottery plates are printed in blue with a circular panel to the center with The Attack of the Griffin with neo-classical scenes in a circular surround and in oval panels on the border. The rim with a basketweave band and an openwork rim with blue outline. This scene shows a Griffin, a mythical creature, attacking an inhabitant of the river Arimaspias to prevent them from stealing gold from the local mines.

Mark: Underglaze blue workmen's marks

Condition: Good

Dimensions: 7 1/2 inches x 3/4 inches high

The neo-classical “Greek” pattern, introduced in 1806, catering to the demand for classical subjects created by the Greek Revival style. The images were taken from “Outlines from the Figures and Compositions upon the Greek, Roman and Etruscan Vases of the late Sir William Hamilton; with engraved borders. Drawn and engraved by the late Mr. Kirk”.

This was probably the first multi-scene pattern introduced at the Spode Factory.
