Jaunty pair of English porcelain napkin rings from the late 19th C. featuring Mr. Samuel Pickwick, the main protaganist of Charles Dickens' first novel, "The Pickwick Papers" of 1836-1837. The fictional character, thought to be based on Eleazer Pickwick (c.1749–1837) a retired English businessman, is loyal to friends and gallant towards women but often hoodwinked by less scrupulous associates. The Dickens' character is so well known and much-loved in England that, in 1959, the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) named Pickwick Island, the largest of the Pitt Islands in the Biscoe Islands, Antarctica, after Samuel Pickwick. These are a perfect set for any English Lit devotee, Dickens fan, or Anglophile. Unidentified artist mark "12198" on lower edge of each.
