Although the fleur de lys is closely associated with French culture, and more specifically, the French Monarchy, the true origin of the symbol is unknown. There are references in historical documents of ancient cultures as far away as India and Egypt. This pair of French chenets features bronze fleur de lys mounted on wrought iron bases.
The term fleur de lys is French for “lily flower”, explaining why the image is floral-like. Each of the fleur de lys has a pointed main petal flanked by two scrolled ones. The knop is comprised of two horizontal bars, while the stalk is shaped with two scrolled terminals.
