Magnificent large Burmese (Myanmar) Kalaga textile art. This Royal scene is heavily embroidered with thousands of sequins and real stones (resembling moonstones), and incorporates silk, felt, wool and cotton. These works of art are indigenous to Burma (Myanmar) where it was purchased in the 1980's.
The padding gives a 3 dimensional effect. These masterpieces take months of hand-stitching to complete. This scene is of a Royal Prince, his attendants and horses. Main colours are brown, orange, pink, green and silver. A little blue and black.
"Kalaga" is the name for Burmese embroidered tapestries - it means curtain.
They commonly depict the Journeys of Buddha towards Enlightenment or the Hindu Epic Journey of King Rama.
These tapestries use a sewing technique called shwe gyi. This art form emerged during the Konbaung dynasty in the mid-19th Century and reached its zenith during the reign of Mindon Min. This piece is in very good condition and would lend itself to being hung in many a location where a focal point is required or incorporated into another piece of work such as a drape/curtain or panel for example.
A beautiful piece ready for framing or incorporating into a larger item such as a wall panel or a larger piece of fabric. Listed by East2West Furniture.
