Built of red clay, the terracotta pot … Read more This antique earthenware jar was hand made in Southern France, circa 20th century. Built of red clay, the terracotta pot is round in shape with a tapered base decorated with two handles at the top; the olive jar is embellished with a olive green glaze around the neck and rim, and has a terracotta tone throughout the body. Overall, this decorative vessel is in excellent condition with a rich aged patinated finish.
In the south of France and especially in Biot (small village on the French Riviera), these olive pots also known as the "king of jars", were used to transport olive oil in the 17th and 18th century.
