Comes from a rare First Edition folio of the artist published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1940-1950s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 6. Excellent condition - never framed.

The Duchess of Alba (1762-1802) was probably the most important woman in Goya’s life and he painted many portraits of her. She was a willful, passionate, unconventional and highly educated woman, the descendant of one of the most prominent aristocratic families in Spain. After the death of her husband in 1796, she retired for a period of mourning to her Andalusian estate of Sanlucar. Goya followed her and spent six months with her there. Their liaison lasted until her death, under mysterious circumstances. With her outstretched arm she is pointing to the dedication written on the ground beside her: “To the Duchess of Alba, Fr. de Goya 1795.” See less
