Comes from a rare First Edition folio of the artist published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1940-1950s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 4. Excellent condition - never framed.

At the start of his career, Goya owed much to Francisco Bayeu, under whom he studied for several years in the late 1760’s and whose sister Josefa he married in 1773. It was recommendation of Bayeu that the young Goya was introduced to the circle of court painters led by Mengs and was first commissioned, in 1775, to paint tapestry cartoons. This fine picture shows Goya at the height of his powers as a portraitist. He painted another portrait of his brother-in-law a few years later (1795, Prado, Madrid). See less
