Comes from a rare First Edition folio of the artist published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1940-1950s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 3. Excellent condition - never framed.

Goya drew, etched and painted a number of self-portraits at various periods of his career; this one shows him when he was nearly forty. Standing with his back to the light, with a large canvas on the easel in front of him, Goya is wearing skin-tight breeches, a short coat with embroidered edges, and a stove-pipe hat having a metal brim with fixtures into which lighted candles could be set, enabling him to work at night. A while ruffle juts out under his chin, while his dark unkempt hair tumbles over the collar of his coat. The brush in his right hand is resting on the canvas, while the palette on his left forearm is dotted with dabs of pure color. See less
