Terracotta red and gold Antique Burmese Monk on inscribed plinth. The young monk is sitting with his legs to the side, with his hands in prayer / meditation. Both the robe and base are decorated with a single row of small 'circular glass pieces' that gleam in the light. (Approx 2 missing on the back.) This figure is hand carved wood, lacquered and with gilt.
The lacquer is very different (feel/colour/richness) from what you see nowadays - and has age to it. Correct amount of patination for age.
Age Mid- Late 19th. Century, possibly earlier.
Purchased in Rangoon in the 1980's by ourselves.
As of Dec 2021 Sothebys had an almost identical piece for sale at auction - starting price was $1250!
