about: ferrarese walnut briar (ferrara, famous italian medieval and renaissance city).

the ferrarese walnut briar is made only following man-made modifications. In fact, walnut trees were planted in the rows of vines to support them. To prevent them from growing too much, these walnuts were pollarded, which facilitated the formation of humps on the trunk and suckers on the foot. Today, however, this use is falling into disuse, and therefore the related briars are increasingly difficult to find. The characteristic of the ferrarese walnut briar is given by the contrast between lighter and darker veins that fit together in a twisted and variegated way. Even the "defects" caused by the incorporation of knots and bark, which cause more or less pronounced holes, are a characterizing element that constitute particular value. See less
