Titled below ''Vue des jeux Tournois dans le Sup be Manege de son ASM le Duc de Baviere''. Mixed colored engraving hand colored. Good conditions except for some stains on paper. Include passepartout: 41.6 x 52.5 This kind of artwork is known as optical views, a particular kind of prints, which, if viewed through a specific device called zograscope or ''optical box'', give the illusion of relief and accented perspective. They were created and mainly diffused in the second half of the 18th century. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, there were many popular specialty establishments in Paris, Augsburg, and London which produced optical viewing devices and special engravings to be viewed through them. They are usually etched and invariably designed to be seen through a viewing machine, with consequent reversals of text and image. They often show monumental buildings (palaces, churches or town halls) or characteristic parts of towns. More rarely they show portraits, depict moralistic or biblical themes, or historical events. This print represents a very detailed scene: a horse-drawn tournament organized inside the stables of the Duke of Bavaria. The jockeys and the horses are meticulously rendered; on the balconies, the spectators watch the competition. This artwork is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago by an artist who has died requires a licence for export regardless of the work’s market price. The shipping may require additional handling days to require the licence according to the final destination of the artwork. See less
