Two doors with original glazed panels open onto four adjustable shelves that can be arranged according to your needs. The lower door panels are beautifully hand carved with a classical urn holding a bouquet of flowers. Each urn is framed by scrolling acanthus and draped with a laurel garland, and bellflower pendants fall at either side.
In the neoclassical vocabulary, the urn recalls the art of antiquity and the garland stands for honor and celebration, so the carving carries the same meaning found in the finest Louis XVI interiors. A beaded frieze and carved rosettes crown the cornice, and fluted pilasters run down to tapered feet. The bookcase is built with traditional frame and panel construction, and its paneled sides are finished as carefully as the front. The solid oak has a warm, rich patina that brings out its pronounced grain.
The 19th century revival of all French styles celebrated the refined legacy of French furniture making. Country cabinetmakers took up the Louis XVI style with real affection, carrying its restrained ornament and architectural lines into the native oak of their regions.
