This remarkable 19th century English oak settle does both.

Created in the Renaissance Revival style, this beautifully proportioned settle is a celebration of the woodcarver's art. Its richly decorated surfaces reveal an astonishing variety of details, each one thoughtfully worked into the oak with a care and imagination that deserve a closer look.

Botanical motifs wind their way through the carvings, bringing movement and rhythm to the design. Amongst the foliage appear pairs of curious creatures, seemingly seahorses, their fantastical forms recalling the mythical imagery so often found in Renaissance decorative arts. Presiding over it all, at the peak of the seat back, is a wonderfully expressive Green Man, his face emerging from the surrounding ornamentation.
