The generously rounded ceramic vessel features a short neck and a creamy white glazed surface decorated with hand-painted brown motifs, including stylized floral and foliate designs and Chinese characters around the shoulder. The irregularity of the decoration, subtle glaze variations, and areas of wear give the jar the wonderfully individual character of a utilitarian vessel made and used more than a century ago.

Originally used for storing or transporting wine and other liquids, this jar makes a striking decorative object today. Its substantial scale works beautifully on a console, cabinet, pedestal, or floor, either displayed alone or grouped with other antique Chinese pottery. The neutral palette and graphic painted decoration complement Santa Fe, wabi-sabi, boho chic, rustic, eclectic, or contemporary interiors.
