An exceptional original architectural etching by renowned Italian artist and engraver Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778), depicting the ancient Roman Tomb of the Plautii along the historic road connecting Rome to Tivoli, near Ponte Lucano.
Titled Veduta del Sepolcro della Famiglia Plauzia, this striking composition originates from Piranesi’s celebrated Le Antichità Romane (Roman Antiquities), first published in 1756. The intricate engraving captures the monumental cylindrical Roman tomb in remarkable architectural detail, surrounded by classical ruins, figures, and the atmospheric Italian landscape.
Piranesi’s distinctive mastery of perspective, dramatic contrasts, and meticulous linework brings extraordinary depth and historical character to this important architectural subject.
The etching bears the original printed Italian title along the lower margin, together with the inscription “Piranesi Architetto dis. e scolp.” identifying the artist as both designer and engraver.
Professionally presented beneath glass with a generous neutral mat and substantial dark wood frame, this historic artwork offers a sophisticated addition to a traditional, neoclassical, or thoughtfully curated contemporary interior.
