The continuous hand-painted landscape depicts the weathered stone ruins of kenilworth castle in warwickshire, rising above open banks and a rutted country pathway under a pale, cloud-swept sky. The composition continues around the circumference, moving into a tranquil reverse view framed by delicate birch trees, scrub, and distant blue hills. Naturalistic earthy ochres, soft russet tones, and mossy greens across the lower section give way to lilac, peach, and soft blue washes near the rim. Towards the lower right of the castle panorama, the scene is signed in painted script by royal doulton decorator j. Hughes. Dating to circa 1910, the vase is fully marked on the white glazed underside. Base marks include the printed green royal doulton lion-and-crown factory backstamp alongside the handwritten title 'kenilworth castle.' in flowing brown script. Additional hand-painted reference notations read hb3065 and e7239, accompanied by an impressed shape number into the paste. Compact cabinet proportions measuring 12.5 cm in height make this piece typical of early twentieth-century scenic wares produced at the burslem pottery. The porcelain body is well preserved, showing no cracks, chips, hairlines, or restoration, with the painted enamel surface and gilded handles remaining clean and bright. See less
