Executed in smooth vitreous enamel over a subtle pale blue ground, the central equestrian vignette is bordered by a crisp geometric Greek fret meander rendered in deep cobalt blue enamel around the perimeter of the lid. Dating to circa 1920, the piece exemplifies the precise enamelling techniques produced by Viennese silversmiths during the early Art Deco period. The case is constructed with a slim rectangular profile and gently stepped bevelled edges, designed comfortably for a jacket pocket or evening bag. Along one side, a multi-segment barrel hinge provides smooth, steady articulation, while an integrated silver thumbpiece at the front lip ensures firm, positive closure. Opening the case reveals a naturally aged silver interior fitted with side lugs that originally anchored an elasticated cigarette band. The interior surface is stamped with the serial number 1009 alongside official Austrian silver guarantee hallmarks confirming its origin and fineness. Although designed primarily for cigarettes in the early twentieth century, the compact proportions make the piece well suited for contemporary use as a luxury business card or credit card case. The hand-painted enamel panel remains exceptionally well preserved, retaining strong colour saturation, crisp draughtsmanship and a glossy surface, while the plain silver reverse shows light surface contact marks typical of careful antique ownership.
