The character stands with hands tucked into deep trouser pockets, leaning against a short timber post set upon a rocky, grassy mound. His uniform comprises a loose teal-blue sailor suit with a broad collar embellished with anchors, finished with a cap tally distinctly inscribed 'DEFENDER'. Produced in earthenware with a colourful majolica glaze, the model displays rich pooling of colour in the recesses of the fabric folds and facial features. Tones of deep sea blue, warm tan, cream, and soft green define the sculpted details beneath a glossy lead glaze. The hollow opening through the cap functions as a single candlestick holder, combining functional table lighting with humorous novelty sculpture. Palmer Cox's mischievous Brownie characters achieved widespread international popularity following their serial publication in children's periodicals, prompting numerous potteries to produce character figures and decorative wares. Produced circa 1895, this nautical version reflects the broader Victorian enthusiasm for comic figurative ceramics. The underside of the hollow base displays impressed numerals, readable as 2891, alongside a secondary impressed mark and a painted black number 21.
