Artist Bio: Jacques Hnizdovsky (1915–1985) was a Ukrainian-American painter, printmaker, and illustrator recognized for his detailed woodcuts depicting botanical and animal subjects. Born in Ukraine, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb before immigrating to the United States in 1949. His work was exhibited internationally and is represented in numerous public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Library of Congress, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In addition to his printmaking career, Hnizdovsky illustrated numerous books and designed book covers and postage stamps. His woodcuts remain recognized examples of 20th-century relief printmaking.
