The perimeters of the tops are cut with serpentine contours and ogee-moulded edges with pronounced rounded corners, introducing fluid movement above the rectangular cabinet carcasses. Beneath the overhanging top, each nightstand houses a single full-height cupboard door hung on neat brass butt hinges. The doors are faced with well-figured flame mahogany veneer, exhibiting vertical grain patterns with warm amber and deep reddish-brown tones. Each door retains an original cast brass drop handle mounted upon a foliate cartouche escutcheon plate, opening to reveal a single internal cupboard compartment designed for practical household storage. The lower waist of each cabinet features a stepped waist moulding above an apron detailed with scalloped, arched cut-outs across the front and returns. Supporting the structures are bold cabriole legs carved at the knees and terminating in prominent ball and claw feet. The overall design draws heavily upon eighteenth-century Queen Anne and Chippendale cabinetmaking traditions. Affixed to the timber is a circular red and white maker's badge reading ‘Beeneet Meubels Furniture’ centred by a dining chair motif. Although styled after early furniture and occasionally described as circa 1900, the bilingual English and Afrikaans label points to South African production from the mid-twentieth century. Each cabinet measures 44 cm in width by 44 cm in depth, standing 69.5 cm high to the tabletop and 76.5 cm high to the crest of the rear gallery. These compact proportions make the pair well suited for use as bedside pot cupboards, low side tables, or lamp stands beside living room seating. See less
