Add a touch of authentic 19th-century English elegance to your home with this exceptional matched pair of 1802 George III reverse glass mezzotints. Housed in their original gold-leaf beaded frames, these pieces offer a rich, historic patina and vibrant color that instantly elevates any traditional, neoclassical, or English country interior
The Pair of includes “Christ Conversing with the Woman of Samaria,” inscribed “Pub. May 20, 1802, by P. Stampa, 74 Leather Lane, London,” with the scripture reference to St. John, Chapter IV, verses 7 to 28, and “Return from Egypt,” inscribed “Pub. July 27, 1802, by I. T. Railton.” They were produced in London in the reverse-glass mezzotint or églomisé process, with printed imagery applied behind glass and finished with hand-applied color.
The frames retain early backing paper and iron wire mounts. Visible condition includes age-related wear, with localized lifting and peeling of paint, surface haze, air bubbles in the glass, patina, rubbing, flaking, and superficial cracking to the gilding.
