This exceptional historical presentation features an original steel engraving of Benjamin Harrison (1833–1901), an authentic handwritten Civil War pension appeal, and a period signature attributed to Harrison, beautifully preserved in a custom museum-style frame. An impressive addition for presidential autograph collectors, Civil War historians, and enthusiasts of American political history.
Dated February 24, 1885, the handwritten letter, on Grubbs & Parks, Attorneys at Law stationery from Martinsville, Indiana, was addressed to Harrison during his service as a United States Senator (1881–1887). Attorney G. W. Grubbs appeals for an increase in the government pension of Jeremiah Collier, a disabled Civil War veteran of Company H, 70th Indiana Infantry—the regiment Harrison commanded during the war.
The correspondence offers a compelling glimpse into 19th-century veterans' pension advocacy and Harrison's political career, four years before he became the 23rd President of the United States. A distinguished Civil War veteran who attained the rank of brevet brigadier general, Harrison was a prominent supporter of veterans' pensions, making this appeal particularly relevant to his military service and political interests.
The presentation also includes an original engraved portrait of Harrison and a custom brass identification plaque inscribed "Benjamin Harrison, Twenty-Third President of the United States."
Professionally framed with a rich black archival mat and an ornate, heavily gilded museum-style wood frame. Protected beneath UV-filtering, non-glare glass.
