Set of 3 Antique 1830s William Ridgway “View from Ruggles House, Newburgh” Black Transferware Soup Plates
Description:
Three Staffordshire earthenware soup plates by William Ridgway of Church Works, Hanley, circa 1830s-1840s. Each has a black transfer-printed view of the Hudson River at Newburgh, New York, with sailboats on the water and the Highlands rising behind. The scene is set in the well of a wide, plain white rim. It comes from Ridgway’s series of American views, made for the export market, and historical views of the Hudson are sought after by collectors of Americana ceramics.
The back of each plate carries a printed eagle-and-shield cartouche reading “View from Ruggles House, Newburgh, Hudson River” with the initials “W.R.,” plus an impressed maker’s mark. They are a good fit for a plate wall, a rail or shelf display, or a table setting in traditional, historic, or Hudson Valley interiors.
