These were placed in front of the fireplace to warm plates and probably to keep some food items warm. The back is open to allow the heat in. The brass knob on the front door turns to open showing the 3 shelves on the inside. The piece is raised on cabriole legs with acanthus leaves on the knees and ending in claw feet. The feet are or should I say were removeable. As you can see in the photos originally the legs slid into the slots and over the years nuts and bolts were added 1 at a time to keep the legs in place. Please look carefully at the last photo. You can see that the bottom is not attached to the side. This could probably be soldered in place but beyond my ability. There is some wear to the painted decoration along mainly the front edge of the top and a little bit of flaking on the door. An interesting item which are not that easy to find. It dates from the mid 19th century. Piece is 27" tall and the widest and deepest points are at the feet and those measurements are 17 1/4" wide and 12 1.2" deep. See less
