The rectangular form is built around a sturdy bamboo framework, with tightly woven panels arranged in a herringbone pattern across the sides, lid and interior.

Broad vertical bamboo supports reinforce the woven body, while wrapped bindings secure the framing and emphasize the handmade construction. The fitted lid is hinged and retains an elaborate arrangement of dark iron hardware across the front, including a central locking mechanism and additional hooked fittings. Iron carrying handles are mounted to the sides.

The interior is also fully woven, revealing the craftsmanship of the basketry construction and offering generous storage. Variations in color, wear and surface texture throughout give the chest considerable character.

With its compact trunk-like proportions, natural materials and utilitarian origins, this piece could serve as decorative storage, a blanket chest or an accent piece in a relaxed interior. Additional examples are available, each individually made and therefore unique in its details and coloration. See less
