A charming and unusual antique Victorian figural silverplate novelty featuring a baby chick peeking out from a beautifully sculpted cracked eggshell. The egg rests above a decorative wishbone motif and is mounted on an elegant heart-shaped tray with an ornate raised border.
Marked Rogers Smith & Co., Meriden, Connecticut, Quadruple Plate, No. 126, this delightful late 19th-century piece showcases the imaginative figural designs that made Victorian silverplate so appealing.
Likely originally intended as a figural toothpick holder, or egg cup (see last photos) it also makes a wonderful conversation piece for a silver collection, tabletop display or curated antique vignette.
A particularly appealing example of Victorian whimsy, combining sculptural detail, sentimental symbolism and decorative silver craftsmanship. The charming composition brings together three traditional motifs: the heart, symbolizing affection; the wishbone, associated with good wishes and luck; and the newly hatched chick, representing new life and renewal. Together, they give this whimsical Victorian silverplate novelty an especially sentimental appeal.
