It is exceedingly uncommon to find both original pieces preserved together as a complete set: the heavy scalloped tray with a refined gadrooned/rope rim and dual side handles, along with its original removable cradled asparagus rack. The elevated rack features individual vertical tines designed to cradle freshly steamed asparagus spears, allowing excess water to drain into the lower well of the tray to keep the vegetable crisp and un-soggy during service.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, dedicated single-purpose serving pieces—such as asparagus cradles, sardine boxes, bone dishes, and muffin warmers—were the ultimate symbols of socio-economic prestige. Specialized hollowware like this was exclusive to the British landed gentry, aristocracy, and affluent upper-middle class.
In high Victorian and Edwardian society, dining was a complex, multi-course ritual governed by strict etiquette. Vegetables like asparagus were costly seasonal luxuries grown in private estate hothouses or country house gardens. Serving asparagus required its own bespoke etiquette and silver apparatus, signaling to dinner guests not only the wealth of the host's kitchen, but also a refined mastery of formal entertaining.
