This sculptural Dorothy Thorpe “Pretzel” candlestick twists a substantial rod of crystal-clear Lucite into an exuberant looping knot, topped with a sleek silver-tone metal candle fitting.

Created circa 1950s, the wonderfully playful design is known as the “Pretzel,” one of several sculptural Lucite candlestick forms produced by Dorothy Thorpe. The thick, beautifully clear Lucite bends and overlaps in a continuous ribbon-like form, creating reflections and refractions that change as you move around the piece. A small clear foot provides an ingenious bit of balance while nearly disappearing beneath the sculpture.

Thorpe was known for bringing a glamorous modern sensibility to postwar American interiors, and this candlestick is a terrific example: sophisticated and substantial. The combination of transparent Lucite and gleaming silver-tone metal makes it remarkably versatile, equally at home among mid-century furnishings or mixed into a more contemporary collected interior.
