Rare Carrinho de Chá tea trolley by Jorge Zalszupin, manufactured by L’Atelier in Brazil, 1959. This exceptional tea trolley stands as one of the most celebrated and recognizable works in Jorge Zalszupin’s oeuvre. Conceived in 1959, the Carrinho de Chá perfectly encapsulates Zalszupin’s unique ability to merge Brazilian craftsmanship with a refined modernist vocabulary. Today, it is widely regarded as a timeless classic and one of the most sought after functional sculptures among collectors of post war design. The trolley is constructed around a solid black painted iron frame, lending the piece both structural clarity and visual restraint. Suspended within this framework is a striking origami like lower shelf, its sharply folded planes carved from veneered hardwood. This sculptural element introduces a sense of movement and tension, transforming a utilitarian component into an expressive architectural gesture. Above, a second shelf, crafted from solid hardwood functions as a removable serving tray. Sculpted with integrated recesses and fluid contours, it can be used on both sides, reinforcing the trolley’s versatility while maintaining a strong sculptural presence. The richness of the hardwood grain adds warmth and depth, contrasting beautifully with the rigor of the metal structure. Movement is provided by two large open brass wheels, a defining feature of the design. Their generous scale and refined geometry draw immediate attention, while the natural aging of the brass contributes a desirable patina. A discreet supporting leg with a small rotating wheel and a solid wooden hand grip completes the composition, aligning seamlessly with Zalszupin’s minimal yet expressive approach. This example has been restored with great care. The wood has been fully restored to highlight its natural beauty, while the original black painted metal frame and brass wheels retain their authentic patina. Pre restoration pictures are available with the sale The result is a rare and honest object that embodies the spirit of Brazilian modernism and the enduring vision of Jorge Zalszupin.
