Frab – tlemcen | christ in majesty | french glazed ceramic diptych | desvres, 1950s
an exceptional and beautifully preserved example of mid-century french religious decorative ceramics, comprising two original glazed tiles depicting christ in majesty.
the composition is inspired by romanesque and byzantine sacred art, with christ enthroned within a mandorla, surrounded by the symbolic representations of the four evangelists.
richly colored polychrome glazes, expressive raised black outlines and a striking combination of deep blue, emerald green, red, purple and golden yellow give the piece a remarkable decorative presence.
artist and manufacture
the front bears the inscriptions frab and tlemcen.
the reverse is marked frab tlemcen, while the second tile carries the distinctive desvres rooster manufacturer’s stamp, associated with the fourmaintraux ceramic tradition in northern france.
the artwork is attributed to brother andré bouton (1914–1980), known as frab, a benedictine religious artist associated with artistic work in north africa.
