This mid century carved wood Ganesh from Northwest India has a patinated wax finish rubbed to a deep red-brown, with remnants of old paint still catching in the carving. Ganesh, the remover of obstacles, is honored at the start of new ventures in Hindu homes and shops, and carved figures like this were made for household shrines and thresholds.

At 18.5 inches tall and 10 inches wide, it can stand on a tabletop, a shelf, an entry console or a home altar, or be mounted on a wall as carved art. The dark wood and fine relief detail reward a close look in either setting.
