This vintage Burmese carved wood statue wears a sash worked in raised scrollwork and set with tiny glass inlay in green, red and mirror, with painted eyes that follow you across the room. Gilded and jeweled figures like this were made as devotional pieces for shrines and homes in Burma, and years of handling and devotion have rubbed the rouge gilt back to the red beneath.

At 13 inches tall, it suits a shelf, a console or a quiet corner of a meditation space. The worn gold and red give it a warm, lived-in glow, and the relaxed seated pose gives it a presence that is calm rather than formal.
