A handsome early 19th-century English Regency mahogany stick barometer and thermometer, bearing the maker's signature of Thomas Jones, Liverpool, and dating to approximately 1820. This elegant scientific instrument combines the practical purpose of monitoring atmospheric pressure and temperature with the refined craftsmanship of Regency-period English cabinetmaking. Liverpool was an important maritime and commercial center during this period, where accurate weather instruments were especially valued by merchants, navigators, and households alike. The barometer's beautifully proportioned mahogany case, shaped architectural pediment, and contrasting decorative details give it a distinguished appearance, while the signed silvered dial provides an appealing connection to the history of English instrument making. Both a functional scientific instrument and an attractive piece of period wall furniture, it would make a wonderful addition to a library, study, hallway, or traditional interior.
The tall, slender mahogany case features a gracefully shaped pediment surmounted by a turned ivory-colored finial, with a glazed upper compartment enclosing the barometer's silvered brass register plate. The dial is elegantly engraved with the signature "Thomas Jones Liverpool," together with traditional weather indications including Very Dry, Set Fair, Fair, Change, Rain, Much Rain, and Stormy. A calibrated pressure scale and adjustable brass indicator allow atmospheric changes to be observed and compared over time. Below the main dial, the elongated mahogany shaft incorporates a separate glazed thermometer with an engraved temperature scale and traditional descriptive markings. A small brass adjustment fitting appears beneath the thermometer, while the lower portion terminates in a shaped cistern cover with contrasting dark decorative inlay and a black-painted cup-shaped element. The warm mahogany grain, finely molded edges, aged silvered surfaces, and surviving brass fittings contribute to the instrument's attractive period character. Its combination of carefully executed cabinetmaking and precision instrument design reflects the craftsmanship associated with English scientific instruments of the Regency era.
The barometer is in nice antique condition, displaying scattered surface marks, minor scratches, finish wear, and variations in color consistent with approximately two centuries of age and normal use. The mahogany retains a rich, warm patina, while the silvered brass register plates show age-related tarnishing, discoloration, and spotting. The glazing and brass fittings display minor wear, and the ivory-colored finial shows some discoloration consistent with age. The original character of the instrument remains particularly appealing, including its signed dial, engraved scales, and decorative lower cistern housing. As with any antique mercury barometer, accuracy and calibration should not be assumed without specialist testing, and the instrument should be handled and transported carefully. Whether appreciated for its historic scientific purpose or displayed as a decorative example of Regency craftsmanship, this signed Liverpool barometer offers a wonderful combination of period character, visual elegance, and historical interest. 39h x 4w x 3d
