On offer is a set of four modern wrought iron and oak X Form campaign-style armchairs by noted 1960s California architect, landscape architect and furniture designer Cleo Baldon (1927–2014).
STYLE: Historically, campaign furniture was designed for military officers on the move. It relied on folding hinges, collapsible frames, and light woods to pack flat into supply wagons. But with these 1960s chairs, Cleo Baldon abstractly "modernized" this language by prioritizing the geometric aesthetic over actual portability. Instead of a canvas sling that collapses, the "scissor" or X-frame structure is fixed, heavy, and permanently welded into architectural wrought iron. Rather than using soft leather straps or canvas webbing, the seat and back are engineered using rigid, heavy-gauge steel structural bands layered in a zig-zag crisscross pattern. The stark minimalism of the black industrial iron frame is softened by warm, cylindrical oak wood poles serving as the upper back rail, armrests, and bottom stabilizing stretchers.
CREATOR: Cleo Baldon was an exceptionally influential Southern California architect, landscape architect, and furniture designer who came to define the mid-century "California Cool" aesthetic. While highly celebrated for her organic industrial furniture, she is most famous for her monumental impact on outdoor living architecture. Baldon designed over 3,000 swimming pools in Southern California and is credited with developing and popularizing the modern residential lap pool. She also held the original design patent for the ergonomic contour spa with molded underwater seating. Her furniture was born out of a desire to create structurally resilient, high-design furniture that could seamlessly blend indoor sophisticated rooms with outdoor pool patios.
MANUFACTURER: Terra of California was the high-end furniture manufacturing company co-founded by Baldon and her landscape architecture partner, Sid Galper, based in South El Monte, California. Established in the 1960s, Terra specialized in producing artisanal, ruggedly constructed luxury furniture that could withstand the elements while maintaining a sleek, modern silhouette. During the mid-to-late 20th century, Terra was widely considered by interior architects to be the premier upscale choice for high-end California patio and indoor-outdoor living, operating as the primary design-forward alternative to mass-market brands like Brown Jordan.
INSTALLATIONS: These chairs perfectly met the needs of California’s much envied “indoor/outdoor” lifestyle. Because of their extreme durability and high initial price point, these they were targeted at specific buyers. Elite decorators heavily specified Terra furniture for luxury residential estates in areas like Palm Springs, Malibu and the Hollywood Hills. Famed LA design galleries and curators, such as the prestigious JF Chen Collection, historically collected and showcased Baldon’s X-frame series as masterworks of California regional modernism. Because the wrought iron frames were virtually indestructible, boutique California hotels, corporate pavilions and outdoor conference spaces purchased them to elevate open-air lounges and terraces.
These are offered without their original cushions. This set comes with striped fabric cushions (photos #8,9).
